There are two options when trying to repair a paint chip on your car either by applying touch up paint or refinishing the damaged panel like new. If you do nothing then you might eventually start to notice rust forming on the exposed metal where the paint chip is located. If you don’t seal the exposed metal rust will form small bubbles underneath the paint and continue to spread as long as oxygen and water vapor is present. All the metal needs is water and oxygen to form rust. Touching up the rock chip with paint is the fastest and cheapest way to repair the damage. It might not look brand new from the factory but it will help it from being an eyesore.
The next method to repair the damage is to sand down the paint chips to bare metal and refinish the entire panel. Doing this kind of repair is more expensive but it will have your car looking like new again. With this method of repair you will not be able to tell the damage was ever there. Even though the rock chip may be small and in just one area there are no shortcuts to refinishing a panel and getting it back to factory finish. Your panel will have to be sanded , scuffed, and prepped for paint and this is a whole different ball game that requires more skill, time and materials.
We provide professional touch up services for these types of damage. We use OEM paint provided by PPG and we also use clear coat as the final step to seal any touch ups we do. Applying this clear layer of paint keeps the dirt and grime from building up within the paint chip itself and keeps it clean car wash after car wash. It only takes a fine tip brush, OEM paint, and a little bit a skill to touch up a paint chip like a pro.
